What’s new, in 20 seconds
- ChatGPT Atlas is discontinued. OpenAI launched the browser on macOS on October 21, 2025, and its July 9, 2026 release notes said Atlas was 'scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026.' Its help center now says Atlas 'has been retired' and gets no updates.
- Atlas data doesn't move anywhere automatically. Before August 9, OpenAI said, users could export cookies and passwords to the ChatGPT desktop app and bookmarks to Chrome. Bookmarks, open tabs and history don't transfer, ChatGPT chats stay in ChatGPT, and recovering data you didn't export isn't guaranteed.
- OpenAI's replacements are a built-in browser in the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS and Windows and a ChatGPT extension for Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi. TechCrunch listed Atlas in its October 24, 2026 'AI graveyard.'

Is ChatGPT Atlas discontinued? Yes. OpenAI's standalone AI browser is gone: on July 9, 2026, OpenAI said it would "begin sunsetting the standalone Atlas browser," its release notes that day said Atlas was "scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026," and OpenAI's help center now says Atlas "has been retired" and "will no longer receive updates." On October 24, 2026, TechCrunch put Atlas in its running "AI graveyard," saying it "lasted less than a year." Its browsing features moved into the ChatGPT desktop app and a Chrome extension, part of the same consolidation that ended ChatGPT agent mode, as our agent mode explainer describes.
This story is based on OpenAI's Atlas launch post, its July 9, 2026 announcement and ChatGPT release notes, its help-center articles on the Atlas retirement and the desktop app's built-in browser, its Chrome extension documentation, and reporting by 9to5Mac, MacRumors, TechRadar and TechCrunch, checked October 25 and re-checked October 26, 2026.
The short version
- Status: retired. OpenAI's launch post now reads, "Atlas has since been deprecated."
- When: sunset announced July 9, 2026, when OpenAI's release notes said Atlas was "scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026." OpenAI's retirement help article gives no date.
- Your data: before August 9, OpenAI said cookies and passwords could be exported to the ChatGPT desktop app and bookmarks to Chrome; bookmarks, tabs and history don't transfer automatically; ChatGPT conversations stay in ChatGPT.
- What OpenAI offers instead: a built-in browser in the ChatGPT desktop app (macOS and Windows) and a ChatGPT browser extension.
- Download or Windows version: there's nothing to download. Atlas launched only on macOS, and OpenAI's "coming soon" Windows version never appeared in its announcements.
When was ChatGPT Atlas discontinued?
OpenAI announced the sunset on July 9, 2026, and scheduled the end for August 9, 2026. OpenAI's July 9 post, "ChatGPT for your most ambitious work," introduced a new desktop app and said: "We'll begin sunsetting the standalone Atlas browser." The post didn't give a date, but OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes for the same day, under "Retiring Atlas," say: "Atlas is scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026." 9to5Mac reported the same day that OpenAI product lead James Sun gave "8/9" as the "current targeted date" on X, and MacRumors (July 10) and TechRadar (July 13) reported August 9.
ChatGPT Atlas, from launch to retirement

- Jul 9, 2026OpenAI says it will 'begin sunsetting' Atlas and launches a desktop app with a built-in browserConfirmed
- Aug 9, 2026Atlas scheduled to stop working, per OpenAI's July 9 release notesConfirmed
- Oct 24, 2026TechCrunch lists Atlas in its 'AI graveyard'Confirmed
TechCrunch's October 24 list, by Lauren Forristal, says Atlas was "discontinued on August 9," "with its most useful features absorbed into ChatGPT." That matches the date in OpenAI's release notes; OpenAI's help center says Atlas has been retired but gives no date. The search premise is correct: Atlas isn't paused or rebranded; it's retired.
Why did OpenAI shut down Atlas?
OpenAI framed it as consolidation, not failure. Its July 9 post says the desktop app's new browsing and computer-use features "build on what we learned from Atlas." 9to5Mac quoted Sun: "with all these updates, we are going to be sunsetting Atlas." TechRadar linked the move to OpenAI chief revenue officer Denise Dresser's April 2026 comment that the company would stop pursuing "side quests and fragmented interfaces."
The pattern is familiar. OpenAI closed the Sora web and app experiences on April 26, 2026, as our Sora shutdown explainer recounts, and folded Operator into ChatGPT in 2025.
What happened to my Atlas data?
Nothing transferred automatically. OpenAI's July 9 release notes told users to move any Atlas data they wanted to keep before August 9: cookies and passwords could be exported to the ChatGPT desktop app and bookmarks to Chrome, and pages or URLs from open tabs and history had to be saved by hand. For anyone who missed that, OpenAI's "ChatGPT Atlas retirement" help article says:
- Bookmarks don't transfer. If you exported an HTML bookmarks file, you can import it into Chrome.
- Open tabs and browsing history don't transfer.
- Passwords: if you exported a CSV, you can import it with Google Password Manager's instructions; OpenAI says to delete the CSV afterward because it holds readable passwords.
- ChatGPT conversations are separate from Atlas data and stay in ChatGPT, subject to your plan and workspace settings.
- Atlas browser memories are separate from ChatGPT memories. Deleting ChatGPT chats doesn't delete Atlas memories, cookies or other Atlas data, and OpenAI says not to assume uninstalling Atlas deletes it either. For those, OpenAI points to its Privacy Portal or support.
If you didn't export before the shutdown, OpenAI says recovery isn't guaranteed. Removing Atlas doesn't cancel a ChatGPT subscription. The help article gives uninstall steps for Mac only.
Can I still download ChatGPT Atlas for Windows or Mac?
No. There's no supported Atlas download for either. OpenAI's October 21, 2025 launch post made Atlas available on macOS and said "experiences for Windows, iOS, and Android are coming soon." BGR reported on July 10, 2026 that the browser "never actually made the leap beyond macOS," and none of the OpenAI pages reviewed for this story mention a Windows release. Windows users looking for "ChatGPT Atlas" should use the desktop app or extension below.
What are the alternatives to ChatGPT Atlas?
OpenAI's own replacements come first; the others are AI browsers or assistants that do similar jobs. This table lists only what each vendor's page says.
| Option | Platforms | What the vendor says it does |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT desktop app, built-in browser (OpenAI) | macOS, Windows | "Browse, sign in, download files, and review pages without leaving ChatGPT"; uses its own browser state, not your Chrome profile; asks before using a new website |
| ChatGPT extension (OpenAI) | Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi | Lets ChatGPT "read or act on sites where you're already signed in" from the desktop app; side chat in all but Opera |
| Comet (Perplexity) | Mac, Windows, iOS, Android | "The AI browser that acts as a personal assistant" |
| Dia (The Browser Company, owned by Atlassian) | macOS, Windows | AI browser for work; free download, paid AI plans |
| Gemini in Chrome auto browse (Google) | Android (US) | Agentic tasks such as reserving parking; for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, per Google's August 18, 2026 post |
Table 1OpenAI's replacement is a browser inside ChatGPT plus an extension for your existing browser, not a new standalone browser. Source: OpenAI Help Center and ChatGPT docs, Perplexity, The Browser Company and Google, checked October 26, 2026.

OpenAI's help center says built-in-browser features "may depend on your plan and workspace settings," without listing plans. Separately, ChatGPT Work's cloud browser, which runs remotely, is for paid plans excluding Free and Go, as our agent mode explainer details. If you're also leaving Arc, which shuts down on December 22, 2026, our Arc guide compares browsers with vertical tabs and workspaces.
What's confirmed, reported and uncertain
- Confirmed (OpenAI): the October 21, 2025 macOS launch; the July 9, 2026 sunset announcement; the August 9, 2026 scheduled end date (ChatGPT release notes); the "has been retired" status; the data guidance; the desktop app's built-in browser on macOS and Windows; the extension's supported browsers.
- Reported: Sun's "current targeted date" post on X (via 9to5Mac); that Atlas never shipped beyond macOS (BGR).
- Uncertain: how much Atlas data OpenAI can still recover on request, and how long it keeps it. The help article doesn't say.
