On October 6, 2026, Anthropic expanded its Claude Startups program with a headline offer: a free year of Claude Team, with up to five Premium seats, plus $1,000 in Claude API credits. TechCrunch, which reported the launch the same day, said Anthropic unveiled it at its SF Tech Week event. Demand outran supply. As of October 12, Anthropic's program page says it is "currently over capacity on the Claude Team and $1,000 API credit offers" and will re-review every application.

This story is based on Anthropic's October 6 announcement, the Claude Startups program page and FAQ, Anthropic's credit terms and TechCrunch's report, checked October 12, 2026.

The short version

  • The offer (October 6): one free year of Claude Team with up to five Premium seats for companies new to Team, plus a one-time $1,000 API credit.
  • Eligibility: startups "founded in the last five years or funded in the last two." Bootstrapped, pre-seed and venture-backed companies can apply.
  • How to apply: sign in to the Claude Console and fill out the application at claude.com/programs/startups.
  • Status now: Anthropic says it is over capacity on the Team and $1,000 offers and will re-review all applications. Offers already claimed are unaffected.
  • Still available to members: office hours, events and partner discounts. Startups backed by Anthropic's partner VCs may qualify for up to $100,000 in API credits through their investor.

What did Anthropic offer startups?

Anthropic's announcement lists:

  • Claude Team for a year: "up to five Premium seats for companies new to Team." Anthropic values this at $6,000: five Premium seats at $100 per seat per month, billed annually. A Premium seat gets five times a Standard seat's usage, according to Anthropic's pricing page.
  • $1,000 in API credits: a one-time credit "available as soon as you're approved." Anthropic puts the combined Claude value at up to $7,000.
  • The Claude Startup Stack: discounts and credits "worth up to $45,000 from companies building with Claude." Anthropic says this is the combined maximum at partner list prices as of September 2026, and that "your company may not be able to receive or combine all offers."
  • Support: 45-minute Applied AI office hours every other week, help building and submitting a Claude Marketplace listing, and access to events such as Founder House, hackathons and meetups, where space is limited.

According to the program page, partner offers include ClickHouse ($5,000 in ClickHouse Cloud credits), ElevenLabs (12 months free plus 33 million characters), Hex (six months free on its Enterprise plan), Granola (three months of Business free for up to 10 seats) and Gamma (25% off the first year of Gamma Pro annual), among others. Anthropic notes these come from "independent third-party companies, not by Anthropic." Members redeem them in the Claude Console with codes.

TechCrunch quoted Anthropic's rationale: "the benefits of AI will reach most people through the companies that build on top of models. That makes partnering closely with founders and developers central to our mission."

Who is eligible, and how do I apply?

The announcement says "startups founded in the last five years or funded in the last two are eligible to apply." The FAQ adds that VC funding isn't required: "The program is open to bootstrapped, pre-seed, and venture-backed startups."

To apply, you sign in to the Claude Console and fill out the application linked from claude.com/programs/startups. Anthropic says it aims to review every application within one week and emails you with the decision. Members who receive program credits get higher API rate limits.

Separately, startups "backed by a VC in our partner network" may be eligible for "up to $100K in additional API credits, claimed through your VC." Anthropic doesn't list the partner firms on the page.

What does "over capacity" mean for applicants?

The program page FAQ now answers the question "Does the Startup Program still offer a free year of Claude Team and $1K in API Credits?" Anthropic writes:

  • "We didn't anticipate the demand for the Claude Startups program."
  • "We've received hundreds of thousands of applications over the past few days," and "we're currently over capacity on the Claude Team and $1,000 API credit offers."
  • "If you've already claimed the offer, nothing changes."
  • Anthropic is "reshaping the Claude Startups program to ensure this initiative is of, by and for startup founders," and "we'll re-review all applications which may result in a change in the status of some applications."
  • Existing members keep the Startup Stack, office hours and events, and don't need to reapply.

The FAQ doesn't say when the notice was added, whether new applications for the Team year will reopen, or what the reshaped program will look like. If you applied and were approved but haven't claimed, the wording suggests your status could change after the re-review.

The fine print

  • Credits work only on Anthropic's own platform. The FAQ says they "can't be used on AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or other third-party platforms."
  • Credit terms. The $1,000 credit falls under Anthropic's Supplemental Credit Terms. Promotional credits expire at the time stated when issued, or after one calendar year if no time is stated. They're non-transferable, non-refundable and have no cash value. Anthropic's startup pages don't state an expiry for the $1,000 credit, so check your Console billing page after it's issued.
  • After the free year. Neither the announcement nor the FAQ says what happens to billing when the 12 months end. Check your plan settings before then.
  • "New to Team." The free Team year is for companies new to Team. Anthropic doesn't define the term further.

How it fits with Anthropic's other credits

The startup offer is separate from the monthly API credits that Claude Max and Team plans gained on October 7, which are $100 or $200 a month on Max and up to $500 a month pooled on Team, and expire each billing cycle. The program FAQ says Max and Team subscribers keep those monthly credits. For background on Anthropic's business and its developer-platform push, see Anthropic explained. What's confirmed, reported and uncertain

  • Confirmed (Anthropic): the October 6 offer and its values, eligibility wording, application route, partner perks, the VC credit track, platform restrictions and the over-capacity notice.
  • Reported (TechCrunch, October 6): the SF Tech Week launch and Anthropic's quoted rationale.
  • Uncertain: when the over-capacity notice went up, whether the Team year and $1,000 credit will reopen, the outcome of the re-review, and the expiry date of the $1,000 credit.
