There is no Claude 6 release date. As of October 20, 2026, Anthropic hasn't announced a model called Claude 6, an Opus 6 or any successor to its current Claude lineup, and its newest model, Claude Haiku 5.5, is 13 days old. What is public is a fast release record, a set of retirement dates, and reporting that Anthropic is weighing a new model to answer OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra.

This explainer is based on Anthropic's model documentation, release notes, deprecations page, newsroom and statements, and on reporting by Reuters and the Associated Press, checked October 20, 2026. Leak reports from the tracking site TestingCatalog are labeled as unconfirmed. For prices and which current model to pick, see our Claude model guide.

The short version

  • Confirmed: Anthropic hasn't announced Claude 6. Its four current models are Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5. No Anthropic page checked for this story names a next model or a date.
  • Confirmed: Anthropic ships often. It launched new models on 12 separate days between February 5 and October 7, 2026.
  • Reported: Reuters said on September 18 that Anthropic is considering releasing a new model to counter OpenAI's momentum after GPT-6 Astra. The report names no model and no date.
  • Unconfirmed leaks: a Fable 5.5 listing reportedly appeared briefly in Microsoft Azure's model catalog, and The Information reported on October 19 on a new Anthropic model, according to secondary accounts. Anthropic hasn't commented.

Has Anthropic announced Claude 6?

No. Anthropic's models overview, checked October 20, 2026, lists four current models and says nothing about upcoming ones. Its release notes run through October 15 with no model launch after Haiku 5.5 on October 7. Its newsroom's October posts, through October 18, include Haiku 5.5, a usage policy update, the Cyber Mission, an update on independent evaluators and the public benefit fund, but no new model.

Anthropic has said a few things about what's ahead, without names or dates:

  • September 17, 2026: Anthropic said Claude is helping build its own successor. According to the Associated Press, it said Claude leads about 26% of its model research and development and that about 90% is done in collaboration with Claude.
  • September 2026: In an essay titled "We Must Pace the Frontier," CEO Dario Amodei wrote: "We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models." He added that "pacing does not mean halting model training or technical progress." The only step he said Anthropic is "unilaterally committing to" now is embedding third-party evaluators, not a release delay.
  • September 22, 2026: In its Opus 5.5 announcement, Anthropic said it is preparing its training and evaluation processes for more advanced models, and that models able to fully automate AI research "could be trained soon" and would need a higher safety standard.

Older models remain active too, including Claude Fable 5 (June 9, 2026), Opus 5 (July 24) and Sonnet 5 (June 30). Claude Mythos 5 and Mythos 5.1 are restricted to Project Glasswing participants and organizations in Anthropic's Cyber Verification Program. Our explainers cover the Opus 5.5 system card, Haiku 5.5 and why Fable 5 was once unavailable.

How often does Anthropic release new Claude models?

Often, and not in whole-number jumps. Anthropic has numbered each model family separately since Claude 4, and the "5" generation arrived with Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on June 9, 2026, 383 days after Claude Opus 4 and Sonnet 4. Dates below are from Anthropic's announcements and API release notes.

That's 12 launch days in 2026 through October 7, an average of about 22 days apart. The pattern says Anthropic ships something new most months. It doesn't say when, or whether, a model will be called Claude 6 or Opus 6; Anthropic has never published a naming roadmap.

Which Claude models are being retired, and when?

Anthropic's model deprecations page gives the dates. The one firm date in the coming months:

  • Claude Sonnet 4.5 (claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929): deprecated September 30, 2026; retires November 30, 2026. Anthropic recommends moving to Sonnet 5.5.

Others have only a "not sooner than" date, meaning Anthropic will announce the actual date later:

  • Claude Haiku 4.5: not sooner than October 15, 2026.
  • Claude Opus 4.5: not sooner than November 24, 2026.
  • Claude Mythos Preview: deprecated June 9, 2026; retirement "to be announced."

Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud set their own retirement schedules, Anthropic notes.

What has been reported about Anthropic's next model?

Each item below is reporting or leak-watching, not an Anthropic announcement:

  • Reuters, September 18, 2026. Reporters Echo Wang, Krystal Hu and Milana Vinn, citing three sources, reported that Anthropic is considering rolling out a new AI model to counter OpenAI's momentum after GPT-6 Astra. One source said Anthropic is evaluating the safety of its next model as part of those deliberations. The report names no model and no date. It cites Ramp data putting Astra at about 13% of the enterprise AI spending Ramp tracks, against about 8% for Claude Fable. Anthropic declined to comment. This is the original of the "Anthropic reportedly considers new Claude model to counter GPT-6 Astra" headlines that other sites repeated.
  • TestingCatalog, October 17, 2026. The leak-tracking site reported that an X user shared a screenshot showing Fable 5.5 in Azure's East US 2 model catalog as "Generally available," through a LiteLLM entry with prices carried over from Fable 5.1. LiteLLM removed the entry a day later, when Azure queries came back empty. The site also listed early-access codenames spotted in third-party tools and said a leaker expected a release the following week. It said, "Anthropic hasn't confirmed anything." As of October 20, no Fable 5.5 had shipped.
  • The Information, October 19, 2026, according to the crypto news aggregator ChainCatcher and posts on X: a report on a new Anthropic model said to be better at inferring user intent. Co-founder Amir Efrati asked on X whether Anthropic is "about to release Fable 5.5." The original wasn't available for this story, and the name and timing are unconfirmed.

Is there an official "Claude 6 months free" offer?

Not tied to Claude 6. The only six-month offer found is Anthropic's Claude for Open Source program, which gives eligible open-source maintainers and contributors six months of Claude Max 20x free, per its official page, which doesn't list an end date. Simon Willison wrote about the launch on February 27, 2026, when the criteria were narrower; the page's current criteria include 500 or more dependent repositories or 200,000 combined monthly downloads. Anthropic's separate startup program offers a free Claude Team year, covered in our Claude Startups story.

What's confirmed, reported and uncertain

  • Confirmed (Anthropic): no Claude 6 announcement; the four current models and their prices; the 2025–2026 launch dates; Sonnet 4.5's November 30 retirement; Amodei's pacing essay; Anthropic's statements that Claude is helping build its successor.
  • Reported: Anthropic is weighing a new model to counter GPT-6 Astra (Reuters, September 18). A new model focused on intent (The Information, October 19, via secondary accounts).
  • Unconfirmed: the Azure Fable 5.5 listing and early-access codenames (TestingCatalog and X posts).
  • Uncertain: the name, timing and pricing of Anthropic's next model, and whether it arrives before the IPO that Bloomberg and Reuters say could come in November (see our Anthropic IPO explainer and Q3 revenue story).

What it means for you

If you're on the API, nothing is changing except the Sonnet 4.5 shutdown on November 30. Pick from the current four. If you're comparing labs, OpenAI hasn't announced GPT-7 either; our companion piece covers what OpenAI has said about GPT-7.
