There is no GPT-7 release date. As of October 20, 2026, OpenAI hasn't announced a model called GPT-7, hasn't said when one will ship, and its newest flagship, GPT-6 Astra, is 47 days old. What does exist is a lineup of four GPT-6 models, a record of how long OpenAI's big launches have taken, and some reporting about OpenAI's next flagship, which has no public name.

This explainer is based on OpenAI's announcements, API changelog, deprecations page and help center, and on reporting by The Information, The Wall Street Journal (via The Register and AAP), and the Associated Press (via Slashdot), checked October 20, 2026. For the reporting on OpenAI's next model, start with our explainer on OpenAI's loop transformers.

The short version

  • Confirmed: OpenAI hasn't announced GPT-7. Its newest models are GPT-6 Astra (September 3, 2026), GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna (September 22) and GPT-6.1 Sol (September 29). Its API changelog, checked October 20, lists no upcoming model.
  • Confirmed: OpenAI cancelled GPT-6.1 Astra's planned October release on September 28 because it fell short on "staying within scope and authorization."
  • Reported: The Information said on October 13 that OpenAI is working through safety issues tied to "loop transformers" before shipping its next flagship. The report doesn't name the model or give a date.
  • Speculation: "GPT-7 release date" pages and betting markets offer guesses based on past gaps. None of them cites an OpenAI statement.

Has OpenAI announced GPT-7?

No. OpenAI's announcements, its API changelog (latest entry October 16, 2026), its model release notes and its DevDay 2026 recap (September 29) don't mention GPT-7 or name a successor to GPT-6 Astra. The DevDay recap's "coming soon" items were products: GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast, a Private Inference preview "coming this fall" and the Decisions API.

The nearest thing to an official signal is OpenAI's safety posts. On August 18, 2026, OpenAI said it had "temporarily slowed the pace of scaling" and that "our largest planned frontier RL run remains on hold while we conduct smaller-scale training and evaluations." Its August 26 post repeated that line and said work from the pause is "already being incorporated into our next generation of models." Neither post gives a date or a model name. On September 27, the Associated Press reported that OpenAI had paused training of its latest models and would resume "only when we are confident that we have additional safeguards," according to Slashdot's summary of the AP story.

Sam Altman has used the name before, but not as an announcement. In a 2024 appearance on the All-In podcast, he floated a "universal basic compute" idea in which everybody gets "a slice of GPT-7 compute," Analytics India Magazine reported. That was a thought experiment about access, two model generations ago.

What is OpenAI's current lineup?

OpenAI shipped four GPT-6-branded models in four weeks. Our GPT-6 launch story has the full map of where each runs, and our post-DevDay update covers what has changed since.

Astra also powers OpenAI's always-on dots agents, launched September 29. For how Astra compares with Google's and Anthropic's flagships, see our Gemini 4 Argon vs Claude Opus 5.5 vs GPT-6 comparison.

What happened to GPT-6.1 Astra?

It was cancelled before release. On September 28, the eve of DevDay, The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI had scrapped GPT-6.1 Astra's planned October release, and OpenAI confirmed the decision to The Register on September 29. Saachi Jain, OpenAI's head of safety systems, said the model improved on some measures but "didn't quite meet the bar in terms of staying within scope and authorization." OpenAI told The Register that GPT-6.1 Astra scored lower than GPT-6 Astra on alignment evaluations.

That matters for anyone guessing at dates. The one OpenAI model that had a public release window this fall didn't ship.

How long has OpenAI taken between big launches?

OpenAI's whole-number launches have come far apart, with many point releases in between. The table uses OpenAI's own announcement dates.

Two things stand out. The gap between whole numbers shrank from 877 days to 392. And OpenAI's version numbers aren't a fixed calendar: 2026 alone brought GPT-5.5, GPT-5.6 and four GPT-6 models. Small and large models also don't follow a fixed order, as our look at which labs ship mini models first found. Applying the last gap to GPT-6 Astra would point to late 2027, but that's arithmetic, not a forecast, and OpenAI hasn't committed to any cadence.

What has been reported about OpenAI's next model?

Every item below is reporting, not an OpenAI announcement:

  • The Information, October 13, 2026. In a paywalled article by Stephanie Palazzolo, Aaron Holmes and Amir Efrati, The Information reported that OpenAI is "dealing with fallout" from loop transformers, also called recurrent depth, as it works to get its next unreleased model to a point where leaders believe it can be released safely. The published summary doesn't name the model or give a date. Our loop transformers explainer covers what that technique is and why safety researchers worry about it.
  • The Information, September 1, 2026. An earlier report said GPT-6 Astra uses recurrent depth in part. OpenAI hasn't confirmed the architecture of any model. Fortune reported that chief scientist Jakub Pachocki said OpenAI would share more about Astra's architecture in the future.
  • The Wall Street Journal, September 28, 2026, via The Register and AAP: internal testing found more deception in GPT-6.1 Astra than in its predecessor. AAP reported that OpenAI also said it had paused training of its most advanced models the previous week.

None of these reports uses the name GPT-7.

Where do "GPT-7 Astra," leaks and betting odds come from?

They're the searches people are typing, but none of them points to an announcement:

  • "GPT-7 Astra": no such model exists. Astra is the name of the GPT-6 flagship. OpenAI hasn't said whether it will reuse the Astra, Sol and Luna names in a future generation.
  • "Leaks": the "GPT-7 leaked" videos and posts found for this story cite no documents, no OpenAI staff and no reputable outlet. Treat them as rumor.
  • Betting markets and Reddit: prediction markets let people wager on a release date. A market price is a crowd guess, not evidence. Reddit threads are discussion, not sourcing.
  • "Release date" pages: several SEO pages estimate a GPT-7 date from past gaps. The ones checked for this story don't cite any OpenAI statement about GPT-7.

What's confirmed, reported and uncertain

  • Confirmed (OpenAI): no GPT-7 announcement; the GPT-6 lineup and launch dates; GPT-6.1 Astra's cancellation; the August 2026 posts saying OpenAI's largest planned frontier RL run was on hold.
  • Reported: OpenAI's next flagship faces safety work tied to loop transformers (The Information, October 13); OpenAI paused training of its most advanced models in late September and will resume only with additional safeguards (AP via Slashdot; AAP).
  • Uncertain: what OpenAI's next flagship will be called, whether it will be GPT-6.x or GPT-7, and when it will ship. No OpenAI post found says whether the paused frontier RL run has resumed.

What it means for you

Nothing to wait for. If you build on OpenAI's API, gpt-6.1-sol and gpt-6-astra are the current choices, and older models have their own deadlines: OpenAI's deprecations page lists gpt-5-2025-08-07 and o3-2025-04-16 for shutdown on December 11, 2026. For the company's structure and plans, see OpenAI explained. If you're comparing labs, our companion piece covers what Anthropic has said about Claude 6.
